Grammar patterns · GCSE French
Present tense
Regular -er, -ir and -re endings, plus être, avoir, aller and faire, the four irregulars that carry GCSE French.
Spot the family. Regular -er is -e, -es, -e, -ons, -ez, -ent. Then lock suis, ai, vais and fais.
The important bits
What you need to know
- 1
Regular -er (parler): je parle, tu parles, il/elle parle, nous parlons, vous parlez, ils/elles parlent.
- 2
Regular -ir (finir): je finis, tu finis, il finit, nous finissons, vous finissez, ils finissent.
- 3
Regular -re (vendre): je vends, tu vends, il vend, nous vendons, vous vendez, ils vendent. Third person singular has no -s.
- 4
Être: je suis, tu es, il est, nous sommes, vous êtes, ils sont. Avoir: j’ai, tu as, il a, nous avons, vous avez, ils ont.
- 5
Aller: je vais, tu vas, il va, nous allons, vous allez, ils vont. Faire: je fais, tu fais, il fait, nous faisons, vous faites, ils font.
- 6
Je plus a vowel takes an apostrophe: j’habite, j’aime, j’étudie. Ils/elles -ent is silent but must be written.
- 7
Use the present for habits, facts and now: J’habite à Manchester. Je joue au foot tous les week-ends.
- 8
Je vais plus infinitive is also a future time frame: je vais étudier. Keep it as a spare future, not a replacement for the whole present.
Quotations worth analysing
Short evidence. Real method.
“J’habite à Leeds et je parle français tous les jours.”
Habiter and parler drop -er. Je takes -e, with j’ before a vowel. Tous les jours marks a present habit.

How do regular -er verbs work in French?
Most GCSE verbs are -er. Remove -er, then add -e, -es, -e, -ons, -ez, -ent. Parler becomes je parle, tu parles, il parle, nous parlons, vous parlez, ils parlent. The je, tu and il forms sound similar; the spelling still changes. Ils parlent must keep -ent even though you do not hear it. The same endings fit habiter, jouer, aimer, détester, regarder, écouter and étudier. Watch spelling tweaks: nous mangeons keeps the e so the g stays soft; nous commençons takes a cedilla. Once parler is automatic, you can generate present-tense sentences instead of memorising each verb as a one-off.

What are the -ir and -re present endings?
Finir is the model -ir: je finis, tu finis, il finit, nous finissons, vous finissez, ils finissent. The nous and vous forms show -iss-. Vendre is the model -re: je vends, tu vends, il vend, nous vendons, vous vendez, ils vendent. Il vend has no extra -s. Do not force -er endings onto these families: je fini is a past participle, not I finish. Drill one verb from each family with a time phrase: D’habitude je parle français. Je finis mes devoirs le soir. Mes parents vendent leur voiture. Three model sentences beat a page of isolated endings when you are in the exam hall.

Which present-tense verbs must I learn irregular?
Être, avoir, aller and faire appear in every paper and also build other tenses. Être: suis, es, est, sommes, êtes, sont. Avoir: ai, as, a, avons, avez, ont. Aller: vais, vas, va, allons, allez, vont. Faire: fais, fais, fait, faisons, faites, font. Add pouvoir (peux, peut, pouvons, pouvez, peuvent), vouloir (veux, veut, voulons, voulez, veulent) and devoir (dois, doit, devons, devez, doivent). Je fais du sport, je vais au collège and j’ai quinze ans will do more work in a 90-word answer than a rare regular verb. Learn them as set pieces, said aloud with je, tu and nous.
See the idea in action
Infinitive: parler. Drop -er, add the person. Je parle français. Tu parles trop vite. Nous parlons en classe. Swap the stem for habiter: j’habite, tu habites, nous habitons. Then drop in an irregular: je vais au collège et je fais de l’informatique. Regular engine, then the four irregulars.
Exam technique
Turn knowledge into marks
If a present verb looks identical to the infinitive, you have probably forgotten to conjugate: je parler. Chop -er and add -e: je parle.
Common mistakes
Do not give these marks away

Writing ils parle without -ent, or je parlents with a random t.
- 02
Je habite instead of j’habite, and je aime instead of j’aime.
- 03
Je suis 15 ans. Age is j’ai quinze ans, because age uses avoir.
