Conditional tense

GCSE French conditional: je voudrais, je pourrais, irregular stems, polite requests, and the -ais ending you must not confuse with imperfect.

How do I form the French conditional?

Take the future stem — parler-, ser-, aur-, ir- — then add the imperfect endings -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient. Je parlerais, nous serions, vous auriez. The je form sounds like -é but must be written -ais: je parlerais, not je parlerai (future) or je parlais (imperfect). Drill voudrais, pourrais, irais, serais, aurais as a set for speaking and 90-word future plans. The conditional is the tense of would — hypothetical, polite, or advisory.

Conditional versus imperfect — the exam slip

Both use -ais endings on je, but the stem differs. Imperfect: nous parlons → je parlais. Conditional: future stem parler- → je parlerais. If you meant would, you need the r-bearing future stem. Je mangerai demain is future; je mangerais si… is conditional. In role-play, je voudrais scores politeness; je veux can sound blunt. Mark schemes credit appropriate register.

Job plans: Plus tard je voudrais être prof. Hypothetical: Avec plus d’argent, j’achèterais une voiture. Advice: Tu devrais étudier. You do not need long si clauses at Foundation — one je voudrais être… with parce que is enough range. At Higher, pair si + imperfect with conditional once if you can spell it. Broken conditionals are major errors; a clean voudrais beats a mangled si clause.
