Quotations worth analysing
Short evidence. Real method.
“Quand j’étais petit, j’habitais à Lyon et je jouais au foot tous les samedis.”
Étais, habitais and jouais describe a repeated past. Tous les samedis is the habit signal. One Saturday last month would be j’ai joué.

How do I form the French imperfect?
Find nous in the present, drop -ons, add the imperfect endings. Nous parlons → parl- → je parlais. Nous finissons → finiss- → je finissais. Nous vendons → vend- → je vendais. Nous faisons → fais- → je faisais. Nous avons → av- → j’avais. The endings are -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient for every verb except the stem of être, which is ét-: j’étais. Nous and vous need -ions and -iez: nous parlions, vous parliez. That -i- is easy to miss and it changes the sound. Practise je, nous and ils of parler, faire and être until they are automatic.

When do I choose imperfect over perfect?
If English wants used to, was …-ing, or a description, choose imperfect. Si j’étais riche is a hypothesis you may meet at Higher, but the GCSE core is description. Il était minuit. Il y avait du vent. Le collège était grand. Je portais un manteau. Those set a scene. The perfect then tells the event: J’ai entendu un bruit. In 90-word writing, students often dump everything into j’ai. Swap the background sentences into imperfect and the past suddenly has shape. Age is always imperfect in the past: j’avais treize ans, not j’ai eu treize ans in this kind of description.

Which imperfect sentences should I pre-learn?
A short pack transfers onto almost any topic. Quand j’étais plus jeune, j’habitais… Il y avait… Il faisait… Je m’entendais bien avec… Tous les week-ends, je jouais… À l’époque, je n’avais pas de portable. Those six stems — étais, habitais, y avait, faisait, jouais, avais — cover family, town, school, weather and sport. Add one perfect event so the paragraph is not only atmosphere: Un jour, j’ai visité Paris. Examiners are reading for meaning. A clear used-to sentence is a past time frame. You do not need a rare verb if these high-frequency imperfects are accurate.
See the idea in action
Quand j’étais petit, il y avait un parc près de chez moi. Il faisait souvent beau et je jouais avec mes amis. Un jour, j’ai perdu mon ballon. Étais, y avait, faisait, jouais paint the habit. J’ai perdu is the completed event in the perfect.
Exam technique
Turn knowledge into marks
If you can insert used to and the sentence still works, you want the imperfect. If you can insert yesterday and it is one event, you want the perfect.
Common mistakes
Do not give these marks away
- 01
Using the infinitive stem blindly for être: je êtrais. The stem is ét-: j’étais.
- 02

- 03
Hier je parlais for a single completed action. Hier je suis allé(e) or j’ai parlé is the usual GCSE choice for one event.
