Avoir and être
The two verbs that run French: identity versus possession, age and hunger, and which auxiliary the perfect tense needs.
Avoir for what you have, including years and hunger. Être for what you are. Then pick the same pair as auxiliaries.
The important bits
What you need to know
- 1
Avoir present: j’ai, tu as, il a, nous avons, vous avez, ils ont. Être: je suis, tu es, il est, nous sommes, vous êtes, ils sont.
- 2
Identity, nationality, profession and location with à: je suis élève, elle est française, nous sommes à Paris.
- 3
Age, hunger, thirst, heat, cold, fear, shame, luck, right and wrong use avoir: j’ai quinze ans, j’ai faim, j’ai chaud, j’ai raison.
- 4
Il y a (there is/are) is avoir. Il y avait imperfect. Il y aura future. Il y a eu perfect.
- 5
Perfect auxiliary: most verbs j’ai plus participle. Movement/reflexive je suis plus participle with agreement.
- 6
C’est versus il est: c’est un professeur, c’est difficile. Il est professeur (no article) or il est dans la cour (location).
- 7
Negatives: je n’ai pas, je ne suis pas. J’ai de la chance but je n’ai pas de chance. De after a negative, not du/des.
- 8
Future: j’aurai, je serai. Imperfect: j’avais, j’étais. These four forms unlock a huge amount of writing.
Quotations worth analysing
Short evidence. Real method.
“J’ai seize ans et je suis fatigué(e), mais j’ai de la chance parce que je suis en vacances.”
Age and luck take avoir. Tiredness takes être. En vacances uses être. One sentence, both verbs, no English calque I am 16.

When do I use avoir instead of être?
If English says I am plus an adjective of feeling that is really possession in French, switch to avoir. J’ai faim, j’ai soif, j’ai chaud, j’ai froid, j’ai sommeil, j’ai peur, j’ai honte, j’ai mal à la tête. Age: j’ai quinze ans, never je suis quinze. Need: j’ai besoin de. Like a quality as a noun: j’ai de la chance, j’ai raison, j’ai tort. Être still takes real adjectives of state: je suis fatigué(e), je suis malade, je suis en retard, je suis prêt(e). The test is whether French treats it as a thing you have. If you can insert de la or a noun, it is often avoir. If it is who or how you are, être.

How do avoir and être work as auxiliaries?
In the perfect tense they stop meaning have and be in the English sense and become the helper. J’ai parlé is I spoke. Je suis allé(e) is I went. You still have to conjugate the helper in the present: tu as fini, elle est partie, nous avons vu, ils sont restés. Negatives wrap the helper: je n’ai pas compris, elle n’est pas venue. Questions in speech often invert or use est-ce que: as-tu mangé, est-elle arrivée, est-ce que vous avez fini. Get the helper right and the participle has somewhere to hang. Get it wrong and the whole past time frame wobbles, which is expensive in the 90-word task.

What are the other tenses of avoir and être?
Imperfect: j’avais, tu avais, il avait; j’étais, tu étais, il était. Future: j’aurai, tu auras, il aura; je serai, tu seras, il sera. Conditional, if you need it: j’aurais, je serais. Past participles: eu, été. Those eight present-to-future forms, plus eu and été, cover descriptions, age, jobs and plans. J’avais dix ans. J’étais timide. J’aurai un emploi. Je serai médecin. Il y avait un stade. Il y aura un concert. Drill them as a mini table. They are more useful than a dozen rare regular verbs because they appear inside other people’s sentences in listening and reading as well as in your own writing.
See the idea in action
J’ai quinze ans. Je suis élève dans un grand collège. Hier j’ai eu un contrôle et j’étais nerveux/nerveuse, mais j’ai eu de la chance. Demain je serai plus calme et je n’aurai pas peur. Avoir for age, the test result and luck. Être for identity, the imperfect feeling and the future state.
Exam technique
Turn knowledge into marks
If you are about to write je suis plus a number, stop. Numbers of years, hunger and heat almost always want j’ai.
Common mistakes

J’ai allé. Aller takes être: je suis allé(e).
- 03
Je suis d’accord is correct (agreement as a state). Je suis raison is not. J’ai raison, j’ai tort.
