French listening strategies
GCSE French listening: question types, distractors, numbers and negatives, cognates and false friends, and how to use the second hearing.
Read the question before the audio. First listen for gist; second listen for the exact word that answers.
The important bits
What you need to know
- 1
Before audio: read all questions; underline question word (qui, où, quand, combien, pourquoi).
- 2
Foundation and Higher use multiple-choice, matching, note-taking — know what each task rewards.
- 3
Distractors: wrong time, wrong person, similar-sounding word — second hearing targets the difference.
- 4
Negatives: ne…pas may be swallowed — listen for pas or reduced ne.
- 5
Numbers: 15 vs 50 (quinze/cinquante), 9 vs 19 (neuf/dix-neuf) — write immediately.
- 6
Cognates help (important, sport) but false friends hurt (actuellement ≠ actually; attendre ≠ attend).
- 7
Time phrases signal tense in answers: hier, demain, tous les jours.
- 8
If stuck, eliminate two options and guess — no negative marking on most boards.
Quotations worth analysing
Short evidence. Real method.
“Quand est-ce que tu pars ? — Samedi prochain, à huit heures.”
Quand → time answer. Prochain and à huit heures are the details distractors may swap.

How to use the two hearings
First hearing: follow question order, note one word per answer, do not panic on unknown vocabulary. Second hearing: hunt the gap — what option word did you hear? Compare A/B/C on MCQ. For gap-fill, spell French accurately — accents often not required but plurals matter. Higher tier speech is faster; question reading time is your prep — use every second.

What examiners test besides vocabulary
Opinion (positive/negative adjective), reason (parce que), time frame, price, frequency. Train ear for je voudrais, il faut, on doit, interdit. Public announcements use passive and impersonal: Il est demandé de… Listening revision = grammar recognition under speed.

Revision habits that transfer
Short daily clips with transcript check. Drill numbers out of order. Practise false friends list: actuellement (currently), attendre (to wait), blesser (to hurt), journée (daytime). Pair listening with speaking — same topic vocabulary. In the exam, if you hear one clear match to an option, do not overwrite on second hearing unless sure.
See the idea in action
Question: When does the speaker go on holiday? Options: Friday / Saturday / Sunday. First listen: hear samedi — tick Saturday. Second listen: confirm not vendredi; check prochain does not change day. Write samedi on paper if notes allowed.
Exam technique
Turn knowledge into marks
Combien → write a number immediately. Qui → name or je/mon père. Où → place with à/en if needed in full answer tasks.
Common mistakes
Do not give these marks away
- 01
Not reading questions before audio starts.
- 02
Choosing cognate that is false friend.
- 03
Missing pas in negative answer.
What does actuellement mean in French?
Acurrently
Bactually
Cactively
Show the answer
currently. False friend. Actually = en fait. Actuellement = now/currently.
Quick questions
If this is the bit you searched
How many times is audio played?
Usually twice per section on GCSE papers — use first for gist, second for detail.
Do I need full sentences in answers?
Follow rubric: MCQ needs letter; gap-fill needs word; some tasks need phrase. Read instructions.
