    The role-play is worth 10 marks: five tasks, up to 2 marks each, recommended 1 to 1.5 minutes at both tiers.

    Prompts are in English and unambiguous. Say that thing in French. Do not wander onto a favourite topic.

    You must ask a question as part of the role-play. Prepare question frames: Est-ce que…? Quel/Quelle…? À quelle heure…? Combien…? Où…?

    You have 15 minutes of supervised preparation for the whole speaking test. Note key verbs, not a full script.

    Two marks need a clear, complete message. One mark is a partial or slightly unclear message. Silence is zero.

  6. 6

    If a prompt has two parts, cover both: say what you eat and when. Missing the second half drops the task.

  7. 7

    Unexpected follow-up from the teacher still wants a sentence: opinion, place, time or a simple je ne sais pas, mais…

  8. 8

    Pronunciation must be comprehensible. A perfect spelling in your notes does not help if you then whisper.

How does the GCSE French role-play work?

You receive a card during supervised preparation. Five tasks appear in English, in a situation such as a café, a sports club, a host family or a school office. In the test the teacher plays the other role and you move through the tasks in order. Each task is marked 0, 1 or 2 for communication. Grammar can be simple. The message must be clear. One of the tasks is asking a question; if you never ask, that task scores zero. Timing is tight, so full mini-presentations waste the next prompt. Prepare a verb and a noun for each line, plus one question. Then listen, because the teacher’s script may include a short unexpected ask.

What should I say for each type of prompt?

Give information: a short sentence with a conjugated verb. Je joue au tennis le samedi. Give an opinion: J’adore ça parce que c’est amusant, then stop. Make a request: Je voudrais… s’il vous plaît. Give a time or place: À midi. Au centre-ville. Ask a question: Vous avez un menu ? Tu habites où ? Est-ce que c’est loin ? If the prompt says mention two details, number them on your notes. Past prompts need a perfect: Hier j’ai visité… Future prompts need je vais or a simple future: Demain je vais revenir. Do not upgrade into a 90-word essay. Role-play marks are for completing the transaction, not for range for its own sake.

How do I recover if I freeze?

Buy a second with Pardon ? or Vous pouvez répéter, s’il vous plaît ? Then answer with a survival sentence rather than silence. Je ne sais pas, mais j’aime le foot. C’est à côté du parc. J’ai quinze ans. Recycle the situation vocabulary on the card: if you are in a restaurant, je voudrais, l’addition, c’est trop cher still belong. Never switch to English. If you missed asking the question, ask it at the next pause: Et toi ? and then a real interrogative. Teachers cannot gift you the task, but they can hear a late question. Two clear words that match the prompt beat a long, panicked paragraph that answers a different task.

Can I use tu or vous?

Match the situation. A friend or another student is tu. A waiter, teacher or adult stranger is vous. The card’s context usually makes it obvious.

What if my grammar is messy but the message is clear?

Role-play is marked for communication. A comprehensible je voudrais pizza will score more than a silent perfect subjunctive. Still use a verb.
