Radical-changing verbs
Boot verbs: e to ie, o to ue, e to i, plus jugar, with nosotros and vosotros left outside the boot.
The boot changes. Draw a boot around yo, tú, él and ellos. Nosotros and vosotros stay out and keep the original vowel.

These verbs change a vowel in the stem, not just the ending. They are still present-tense verbs with normal person endings.

e → ie: pensar (pienso), querer (quiero), preferir (prefiero), cerrar (cierro), entender (entiendo), empezar (empiezo).

o → ue: poder (puedo), dormir (duermo), volver (vuelvo), encontrar (encuentro), costar (cuesta), almorzar (almuerzo).

Jugar is u → ue: juego, juegas, juega, jugamos, jugáis, juegan.

In the preterite, -ir boot verbs change only in the third person: durmió, durmieron; pidió, pidieron; prefirió, prefirieron.

Endings stay regular. Pienso still uses the yo -o. The extra job is the vowel inside the stem.

Quiero (e→ie), jugar → juego would be the boot form, here the infinitive after querer. Puedo (o→ue), empiezo (e→ie). Nosotros would be queremos, podemos, empezamos.

What is a boot verb in Spanish?
Write the six present forms in a grid. The four forms that change sit in a boot shape: yo, tú, él/ella and ellos. The two that keep the infinitive vowel sit outside: nosotros and vosotros. Pensar: pienso, piensas, piensa, pensamos, pensáis, piensan. Poder: puedo, puedes, puede, podemos, podéis, pueden. Pedir: pido, pides, pide, pedimos, pedís, piden. The picture is the memory. If you conjugate nosotros with the change — nosotros piensamos — you have stepped inside the boot by mistake. Say the nosotros form last when you drill, so the original vowel is still ringing.

How do e to ie and o to ue verbs work?
E to ie is the biggest group at GCSE: pensar, querer, preferir, empezar, entender, cerrar, mentir. The e that changes is the last e of the stem: empezar → empiezo, not empieso. O to ue covers poder, dormir, volver, encontrar, costar, almorzar, recordar. Costar is often third person: cuesta mucho, cuestan demasiado. Poder is the modal you need for I can: puedo, puedes, puede. Pair each verb with a useful sentence rather than a bare list: Pienso que el examen es difícil. No puedo salir. El tren cuesta diez euros. Those sentences transfer into 90-word writing immediately.

Do stem changes happen in other tenses?
In the present, yes, in the boot. In the preterite, -ar and -er boot verbs are regular: pensé, pude, volví. The special case is -ir verbs such as dormir, pedir, preferir, servir, seguir. They change in the third person only: durmió, durmieron; pidió, pidieron; prefirió. Yo dormí and nosotros dormimos stay without the change. Gerunds from those -ir verbs also show it: durmiendo, pidiendo. For Foundation writing you can live on present boot verbs plus regular preterites. Higher candidates should watch durmió and pidió so a past narrative does not snap back into duerme.

Turn knowledge into marks
If a present-tense verb looks too English in the stem — yo penso, yo podo — you have probably forgotten the boot. Check yo, then check nosotros.

Writing juego as jogo, or seguir as sigo spelled sego. Seguir is sigo, sigues, sigue, seguimos, seguís, siguen.

Is jugar regular?
Endings are regular -ar. The stem is u→ue in the boot: juego, juegas, juega, jugamos, jugáis, juegan. Preterite yo is jugué, with a u to keep the g hard.
What is I want versus I like?
Quiero plus infinitive or a noun: quiero salir, quiero una cola. Me gusta plus a noun or infinitive: me gusta el cine, me gusta bailar. They are not interchangeable.
