Conditional tense

GCSE Spanish conditional: me gustaría, podría, irregular stems, polite requests, and -ía endings not confused with imperfect.

UNDERSTANDRETRIEVEREMEMBER
THE MEMORY HOOK
Infinitive plus -ía endings — hablaría, comería. Me gustaría is I would like, not I used to like.

The important bits

What you need to know

  1. 1

Use conditional for would: polite requests, hypothetical plans, advice, softened opinions.

  2. 2

Regular: infinitive + -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían — hablaría, comería, viviría.

  3. 3

Irregular stems match future: decir → dir-, hacer → har-, poder → podr-, poner → pondr-, tener → tendr-, venir → vendr-, salir → saldr-, querer → querr-, saber → sabr-.

  4. 4

Me gustaría is the survival phrase for speaking and writing — politer than quiero in many contexts.

  5. 5

Si clauses at Higher: Si tuviera dinero, compraría… — imperfect subjunctive + conditional (recognition/production if secure).

  6. 6

Do not confuse with imperfect: hablaba (used to speak) versus hablaría (would speak). Conditional has extra syllable -ía.

  7. 7

    Polite: ¿Podría ayudarme? ¿Le importaría…?

  8. 8

One conditional in 90-word task shows range: En el futuro me gustaría ser médico porque…

Quotations worth analysing

Short evidence. Real method.

Me gustaría una mesa para dos, por favor. ¿Podría recomendarme un plato?
Restaurant role-play

Gustaría and podría — conditional politeness, not past.

How do I form the Spanish conditional?

Add -ía endings to the infinitive: hablar → hablaría; comer → comería; vivir → viviría. Irregulars use future stem: tendría, haría, diría, saldría, podría, querría. Nosotros hablaríamos — accent on í in -íamos. Me gustaría works like English would like — gustar in conditional with indirect object: me gustaría viajar. Drill gustaría, podría, sería, tendría for exams.

Conditional versus imperfect

Imperfect -aba/-ía describes past habit: hablaba, comía. Conditional -aría/-ería/-iría describes would: hablaría. Listen for extra -r before -ía in many forms. Wrong tense changes meaning: ayer hablaría is nonsense; ayer hablé or hablaba. In writing, match English would to conditional, not preterite.

Using conditional in GCSE tasks

Photo card follow-up: ¿Qué te gustaría hacer? — Me gustaría estudiar medicina. 90-word future bullet: El año que viene iré… plus Me gustaría trabajar en… for range. Do not stack broken si clauses — one gustaría sentence is enough at Foundation.

WORKED EXAMPLE

See the idea in action

Ahora estudio español. El año que viene visitaré Madrid. Me gustaría vivir allí porque la ciudad es interesante. Present, future, conditional — three frames.

Exam technique

Turn knowledge into marks

Speaking: me gustaría + infinitive/noun. Check -ía not -é (preterite) or -aba (imperfect).

Common mistakes

Do not give these marks away

  2. 02

Me gusta viajar for would like in polite role-play — use gustaría.

  3. 03

Wrong irregular stem: podía for would — podría.
