Present progressive

GCSE Spanish present progressive: estar + gerund (-ando/-iendo), right now versus habit, and irregular gerunds (leyendo, durmiendo).

Estar plus -ando/-iendo — happening now. Estoy hablando, not hablo for deliberate in-progress emphasis.

The important bits

What you need to know

    Form: estar (conjugated) + gerund. Hablar → hablando; comer → comiendo; vivir → viviendo.

    Estoy estudiando = I am studying (right now).

    Irregular gerunds: leer → leyendo; dormir → durmiendo; pedir → pidiendo; poder → pudiendo; decir → diciendo.

    Use with ahora, en este momento, ahora mismo for time focus.

    Habits use simple present: Estudio cada día — not estoy estudiando for every routine.

    Negative: No estoy trabajando.

    Contrast: Normalmente juego al fútbol; ahora estoy viendo la tele.

    Do not overuse — simple present is default Spanish.

Forming the gerund

-Ar → -ando: hablando, jugando. -Er/-ir → -iendo: comiendo, viviendo. Stem changes in gerund: dormir → durmiendo, pedir → pidiendo, repetir → repitiendo. Estar must be conjugated: estás leyendo, estamos comiendo. English -ing maps here better than French en train de — but still not for all habits.

Soy hablando, tengo comiendo — wrong auxiliary. Must be estar. Estoy estudiar — need gerund estudiando. Do not use progressive for future: voy a estudiar, not estoy estudiar mañana.
