THE MEMORY HOOK
Read questions first. First pass: gist. Second pass: the word that picks the option.

The important bits

What you need to know

  1. 1

Use reading time: underline qué, quién, cuándo, dónde, cuánto, por qué.

  2. 2

MCQ distractors: wrong time, person, place — second hearing compares options.

  3. 3

Negatives: no…nada, no…nunca, tampoco — listen for no.

  4. 4

    Numbers: 15/50 (quince/cincuenta), 7/17 (siete/diecisiete).

  5. 5

False friends: actualmente (currently), asistir (to attend), éxito (success), sensible (sensitive).

  6. 6

Time phrases signal tense answer: ayer, el año pasado, mañana, todos los días.

  7. 7

Regional accent awareness — still standard vocabulary on GCSE.

  8. 8

Eliminate wrong options; guess if needed — usually no negative marking.

Quotations worth analysing

Short evidence. Real method.

¿Cuándo sales de vacaciones? — El sábado que viene, a las ocho.
Listening pattern

Cuándo → time. Que viene and a las ocho are detail hooks.

Two hearings strategy

First: track question order, jot one keyword. Second: match keyword to option A/B/C. Gap-fill: spelling counts — plurals, accents sometimes forgiven but person endings matter. Higher tier faster — prep time is gold.

Grammar in listening

Recognise preterite vs present endings, voy a + infinitive future, me gusta vs me gustan, ser/estar adjectives. Announcements: se prohibe, hay que, está permitido. Opinion words: me encanta, odio, prefiero, porque.

Revision drills

Numbers out of order daily. False friends list on card. Short clips with transcript. Practice writing heard word before looking — builds ear for endings. Exam: trust clear match on second hearing; do not overthink if first match was strong.

WORKED EXAMPLE

See the idea in action

Question: How does the speaker travel to school? Bus / car / bike. Hear en autobús — tick bus. Second pass: confirm not en coche. Note todos los días if frequency question separate.

Exam technique

Turn knowledge into marks

Cuánto/cuántos → number or quantity word immediately. Dónde → place phrase.

Common mistakes

Do not give these marks away

  1. 01

    Skipping question read-through.

  2. 02

    Actualmente heard as actually.

  3. 03

    Missing no in negative answer.
