    “Renaissance” in this course means a revival of observation, dissection and classical texts from the later fifteenth century, not an overnight cure for disease in English villages.

    Johannes Gutenberg’s printing press (c.1450) and English printers after William Caxton (1476) multiplied medical books. Ideas could travel faster than a manuscript chained in a monastery.

    Humanist scholars recovered Greek texts and, crucially, began to check them against bodies. That attitude made Vesalius (1543) and Harvey (1628) possible.

The phrase, however stylised later, captures organised plague response still aimed at corpses and contagion-as-miasma. Renaissance London could count the dead better than it could explain them.

Printing, patronage and the speed of ideas

Change in this period is a communications story as much as a genius story. A medieval error in Galen could sit in one library for centuries. A printed plate from the Fabrica could be copied, attacked and taught across Europe within a generation. Henry VIII’s 1540 union of barbers and surgeons and the later Royal College of Physicians (1518) created audiences for new books in London. War and exploration also mattered: wound care in the Italian Wars, and new drugs such as quinine (cinchona) from the Americas, entered European practice without overturning humoural theory. In factor essays, technology (press, later microscope) and attitudes (humanism, experiment) outweigh any single king. The consequence was a community that could disagree in print — the precondition for later scientific medicine.

1665 as a continuity test

If you only teach Vesalius, students think 1543 modernised medicine. Set the Great Plague beside him. Bills of Mortality, red crosses on doors, and orders to kill cats and dogs show a state capable of regulation and statistics — Samuel Pepys recorded the fear in his diary — yet the official theory was still corrupted air and divine judgement. Physicians fled London with the court; plague nurses and searchers stayed. Treatments included Venice treacle and tobacco smoke. The Renaissance had improved anatomy and institutions; it had not identified microbes. That is change and continuity in one year, which is exactly how a 16-mark “how much changed” question should be answered.

Evidence for continuity: humoural drugs, 1665 plague measures, no germ theory, most people still using apothecaries and wise women. Conclusion: the Renaissance laid rails that Pasteur would later run on; patients in 1700 still rode the medieval cart.

Never let “Renaissance” become a vague glow. Name the press, a discovery, an institution, and one thing that did not improve (plague treatment, bleeding).
