    John Snow (1813–58) was a London anaesthetist (he gave Queen Victoria chloroform in 1853) who rejected miasma as the cause of cholera after studying the 1848–49 epidemic.

Method before microbe

Snow’s genius is comparative: brewery versus pump, dirty water company versus cleaner one, map versus anecdote. That is scientific method applied to a city, not a flask. Students who wait for Pasteur before allowing any science miss a British empirical tradition. Yet Snow could not culture Vibrio cholerae or explain a germ. Miasmatists could still say the pump area simply smelled. The handle’s removal is therefore both heroic and historically messy — the epidemic curve was falling. In 16-mark answers, credit Snow as a turning point in understanding transmission, then admit limited immediate conversion of government. Bazalgette’s sewers, funded after MPs smelled the Thames in 1858, probably saved more lives in the short term than one Soho parish decision. Weigh epidemiology against engineering and politics.

From Broad Street to the Thames

The Grand Experiment on south-London water companies showed cholera tracking polluted supply even when air seemed similar. That should have killed pure miasma. Institutional lag meant the Metropolis still dumped sewage downstream and drew drinking water nearby. The Great Stink of June–July 1858, in a heatwave, pushed Parliament to fund Bazalgette’s Metropolitan Board of Works scheme: intercepting sewers, pumping stations, and embankments. By the 1870s London’s water-borne death rates were falling. The 1866 cholera hit places still on old systems (East End, parts of the north). Consequence: Snow is a necessary intellectual step; capital politics and concrete deliver the population-level win. Germ theory later made such projects scientifically unarguable rather than merely stink-driven.
