GCSE Geography UK glaciation: Ice Age legacy in Snowdonia, Lake District and Scottish Highlands — corries, arêtes, U-shaped valleys, tourism and quarrying as human pressures on glacial landscapes.
The ice left the scenery; people filled the valleys with sheep, tourists and hydro — manage the landscape or wear it out.

During the last glacial period (peaked ~26,000–20,000 years ago) and earlier ice ages, ice sheets and valley glaciers sculpted much of upland Britain. Ice retreated ~11,700 years ago; land is still rebounding (isostatic uplift) in Scotland.

Corries (cwms): armchair hollows with steep back walls, tarns in floor (Red Tarn, Helvellyn). Snow compacts to firn then ice; rotational sliding erodes the hollow; plucking and abrasion deepen it.

Arêtes and pyramidal peaks: two or more corries back-to-back sharpen ridges (Striding Edge–Helvellyn system) and horns (Matterhorn is the Alpine star; UK examples are smaller but same process).

Formation sequence for corries and U-valleys
Corrie: snow accumulates in a hollow → nivation and freeze-thaw weather the back wall → ice flows by rotational slip → plucking removes frost-shattered rock → abrasion smooths the floor → ice melts leaving a tarn. U-valley: glacier fills a river valley → abrasion and plucking widen and deepen → tributary glaciers cut shallower hanging valleys → main ice removes spurs → post-glacial rivers and lakes occupy the overdeepened trough. Draw or narrate with process words. “It was icy” is not a process mark.

Why glaciation is a resource management story in the UK
The same corries that challenge walkers store water for hydro. Valleys that tourists photograph support farms that shaped the open fells. Quarrying slate built industrial cities. Management is zoning, path repair, farmer payments for environmental stewardship, and caps on visitor numbers in pinch points. A 9-mark question on “how people use glaciated uplands” should name Lake District or Snowdonia, cite tourism income, and cite erosion or congestion as costs — then one strategy (Fix the Fells, Park-and-ride, UNESCO planning).
