Sustainable urban living
GCSE Geography revision on sustainable cities: Freiburg and BedZED as named examples, social-economic-environmental strands, and practical strategies for congestion and urban waste rather than a recycling-bin slogan.
Sustainable urban living is a three-legged stool — green roofs without affordable homes, or trams without jobs, will still fall over.

Sustainable urban living meets present needs without wrecking future environmental, social or economic capacity. One solar panel on a luxury flat is not a city strategy. Examiners want all three strands named.

Freiburg (Germany) is the classic HIC eco-city: Vauban and Rieselfeld districts, tram-first transport, strict energy standards, co-ops and social mix, extensive recycling, and urban forest/park access. Cars are guests in some streets, not landlords.

BedZED (Beddington, Sutton, London) is a compact UK eco-development: high insulation, combined heat, on-site renewables in the original design, water saving, and an attempt at mixed tenure. It is a plot, not a whole city — say so when you evaluate scale.

Transport is land-use design, not a bus leaflet. That is the geographical point.

Name the hierarchy in order. Energy-from-waste is not “recycling”. Landfill methane is the environmental cost of getting the order wrong.

Freiburg is a system, not a tram photo
Freiburg combined politics, planning and energy. After protest against a nuclear plant, the city leaned into solar, strict building codes, and districts such as Vauban where parking is clustered and trams run through the neighbourhood. Social housing quotas and co-operatives try to stop eco-living becoming only a professional lifestyle. Forests and the Dreisam floodplain are part of the urban green infrastructure, not leftover scenery. Copying one tram line into a UK city without land-use rules, cheap season tickets, and mixed tenure will not “make a Freiburg”. In 9-mark “assess” answers, praise the integrated design, then note cost, a different political culture, and the fact that Freiburg is a medium city, not Lagos. Transferability is the evaluation.

BedZED: brilliant plot, awkward scale
BedZED showed that UK housing can cut energy and water use with orientation, insulation, on-site generation and a community energy idea. Residents were meant to live, work and recycle on one site. Some technologies underperformed or proved expensive to maintain — useful honesty for evaluation, not a reason to sneer. The scheme still matters because it is a named, visitable UK example. Limits: hundreds of homes, not a metropolitan strategy; some eco-features need behaviour change that does not always stick; replication needs volume builders and planning, not one architect’s masterpiece. Pair BedZED (building scale) with Freiburg or a UK city transport policy (city scale) and you cover the specification’s demand for “how urban living can be more sustainable”.

Congestion and waste as daily geography
Traffic is not only delay: it is NOx, particulates, carbon, and severed neighbourhoods. Strategies that work together — frequent trams or buses, safe cycle routes, charging for central driving, workplaces near homes — beat a single bypass. Induced demand means extra road space often fills. Waste is a material flow: food waste to anaerobic digestion or compost, dry recyclables as a resource, residual to energy-from-waste or landfill. Freiburg’s high recycling rates come from culture plus infrastructure (collections, fees). A UK city that only prints a “recycle more” poster without weekly collections and markets for materials will stall. For exams, give one congestion strategy with a named place and one waste strategy with a hierarchy word. Then add who pays. Sustainability without finance is a wish.
