Why meat demand multiplies hunger pressure

When incomes rise in NEEs, diets shift toward meat and dairy. Cattle and poultry need grain and soya — often imported from cleared forest frontiers. A hectare feeding humans directly yields more calories than a hectare feeding livestock then humans. That is not vegetarian propaganda; it is land-budget arithmetic examiners expect you to know. Biofuel mandates add another mouth at the table: maize for ethanol is maize not for tortillas. A 6-mark “why is food security worsening” answer should stack population, diet change, climate, and land competition, not only “there are more people”.

Waste and storage: the invisible harvest

In HICs, waste happens in shops and kitchens after purchase. In LICs, loss happens before sale: no cold storage, pests in granaries, muddy roads that never reach a market before tomatoes rot. Fixing security without growing a single extra plant is possible — silos, mobile phones for price information, all-weather roads. Ethiopia’s safety-net schemes pay vulnerable farmers for public works in lean seasons so they do not sell their seed stock. Contrast with emergency food aid after famine is declared: necessary, but it does not build next year’s harvest. Evaluation: technology (HYVs, GM) versus institutions (land rights, trade rules, peace).
