THE MEMORY HOOK
Hyde is not a stranger who invades Jekyll. He is the part Jekyll tried to lock in a cabinet.

The important bits

What you need to know

  1. 1

Duality is personal and social: respectable Jekyll, nocturnal London, divided self.

  2. 2

Utterson’s delayed understanding makes the reader a detective of reputation.

  3. 3

Hyde’s violence is sudden, trampling, “ape-like”—devolution as moral panic.

  4. 4

Science without ethics is the novella’s warning, not a celebration of discovery.

  5. 5

Doors, keys, cabinets and fog turn secrecy into setting.

  6. 6

Language of professionalism—letters, wills, statements—cannot contain the horror.

  7. 7

Repression does not destroy appetite; it distorts it.

Quotations worth analysing

Short evidence. Real method.

Man is not truly one, but truly two.
Jekyll’s statement

The thesis of the whole case: identity is already split before the potion makes it visible.

My devil had been long caged, he came out roaring.
Jekyll’s statement

Repression is the cage; Hyde’s violence is what happens when the respectable self pretends the devil was never there.

Trampled calmly over the child’s body.
Story of the door

The adverb “calmly” is the shock: Hyde’s evil is not hot rage but absence of sympathy.

How do I write about duality?

Do not stop at “Jekyll is good, Hyde is evil”. Stevenson suggests the two share one body and one history. Jekyll enjoys Hyde’s freedoms; Hyde is smaller because he is only the unrestrained part. Duality also describes Victorian London: gaslight respectability and Soho appetite. The potion is a method for making a social and psychological idea literal.

Go deeper

Why is reputation so dangerous?

Utterson, Enfield and Lanyon live by what can be said in a gentleman’s hearing. Silence protects Hyde until it is too late. Jekyll’s experiment is itself an attempt to keep reputation and appetite in separate houses. The novella argues that a culture of concealment will breed monsters and then be unable to name them.

WORKED EXAMPLE

See the idea in action

The back door to Hyde’s rooms is not just setting. It is a thesis: respectable fronts, hidden access, a key that only some men hold. Architecture becomes character.

Exam technique

Turn knowledge into marks

Write about form: letters, incomplete narratives and delayed revelation. The “strange case” structure is part of the meaning.

Common mistakes

Do not give these marks away

  1. 01

Calling Hyde a demon from outside rather than Jekyll’s own making.

  2. 02

Ignoring Utterson, whose limited view is the novella’s method.

  3. 03

Treating the science as magic without discussing Victorian anxiety about evolution and medicine.
