Frankenstein revision
Revise ambition, responsibility, isolation and what it means to be human in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.
Victor makes a life, then refuses the duties of a maker. The horror is abandonment as much as the body.
The important bits
What you need to know
- 1
Nested narratives (Walton, Victor, the Creature) make truth a matter of who is speaking.
- 2
Victor’s ambition is Promethean: knowledge without care.
- 3
The Creature begins as a sensing, learning being; cruelty educates him into revenge.
- 4
Parenthood, not only science, is on trial: Victor will not name or nurture what he makes.
- 5
Nature soothes and warns; the sublime Alps dwarf Victor’s ego even as he climbs them.
- 6
Isolation repeats: Walton on the ice, Victor in the chamber, the Creature at the window.
- 7
The novel asks whether monstrosity is made in a laboratory or in a society that refuses a face.
Quotations worth analysing
Short evidence. Real method.
“I ought to be thy Adam, but I am rather the fallen angel.”
Biblical roles reverse: the creator fails, so the creature learns Satan’s lesson of rejected love.
“Learn from me… how dangerous is the acquirement of knowledge.”
The frame story exists so that one ambitious man can try to stop another. It does not always work.
“I was benevolent and good; misery made me a fiend.”
The line locates evil in experience. Shelley lets the Creature argue, which is already a human act.

Who is the monster?
The obvious answer is the Creature’s appearance. The better answer is a relationship: Victor’s disgust, society’s blows, the De Laceys’ rejection. Shelley keeps shifting sympathy. Victor’s feverish secrecy is monstrous; the Creature’s murder of William is monstrous too. A strong GCSE argument holds both and then judges responsibility: the maker owed care first.

How does the structure help?
Walton’s letters wrap Victor’s story wrap the Creature’s autobiography. Each narrator wants something: a friend, forgiveness, understanding. You should distrust complete confession. The form itself is about empathy—whether we can hear a voice we were trained to call inhuman.
See the idea in action
When the Creature watches the De Laceys, Shelley uses a domestic education plot inside a horror novel. Language, fire and family are the human world he wants. The later burning of the cottage is the death of that hope.
Exam technique
Turn knowledge into marks
Use the word “responsibility” more than “scary”. The exam wants moral argument as much as Gothic atmosphere.
Common mistakes
Do not give these marks away
- 01
Calling the Creature “Frankenstein”.
- 02
Ignoring Walton, who is Victor’s double at the edge of another reckless quest.
- 03
Writing only about science and skipping injustice, family and education.
What is Victor’s crucial failure after the creation?
AHe refuses responsibility for what he made
BHe forgets how electricity works
CHe tells the whole town immediately
Show the answer
He refuses responsibility for what he made. The novel treats the turning away as the original crime that later violence grows from.
