Heart dissection required practical

Plan the GCSE Biology heart observation or dissection practical: identifying chambers, vessels, valves, thickness of ventricle walls and safe technique.

    Aim: observe and identify structures of a mammalian heart (often sheep or ox), relating form to function in the circulatory system.

    Before cutting, identify the apex (pointed bottom), auricles (ear-like atria flaps), and major blood vessels at the top — aorta, pulmonary artery, vena cava, pulmonary veins.

Orienting the heart before you cut

Place apex pointing down. The atria are at the top. The pulmonary artery is usually the forward-facing vessel on a sheep heart; aorta is thicker-walled and arches. Pulmonary veins and vena cava enter the right atrium side. Students often label left and right as mirror images of their own body — the heart’s left is on the observer’s right in standard anterior view. Confirm with wall thickness: thickest chamber is left ventricle. Photograph or sketch before dissection for comparison.
