    Some couples have difficulty conceiving (infertility). Causes can include low sperm count, irregular ovulation, blocked fallopian tubes, or hormonal imbalance. Treatments aim to bring egg and sperm together.

    Fertility drugs containing FSH (and sometimes LH) stimulate the ovaries to mature multiple eggs in one cycle. This increases the chance of conception in IVF or timed intercourse.

IVF step by step — what to write in order

1) Patient takes FSH to stimulate several follicles to mature. 2) Eggs are collected via a fine needle (sedation). 3) Eggs mixed with sperm in lab; fertilisation. 4) Embryos cultured for a few days. 5) One or two embryos transferred to uterus. 6) Progesterone may support lining. 7) Pregnancy test after two weeks. If too many embryos form, some may be frozen or discarded — ethical issue. Do not confuse with cloning or genetic modification unless the question asks. FSH is from the pituitary in natural cycles; in IVF it is injected in higher doses.

How is this different from the contraceptive pill?

The pill contains oestrogen and/or progesterone to inhibit FSH release, so no egg matures — prevents pregnancy. Fertility drugs increase FSH effect to mature eggs — aims for pregnancy. Same hormones, opposite goal. LH surge causes natural ovulation; in IVF timing of collection is controlled. Students mix “hormones stop pregnancy” with “hormones help pregnancy”. Read the question: contraception or fertility.
