Classification and Linnaeus

Classification sorts organisms into groups based on similarities. It helps identify species, name organisms consistently, and shows evolutionary relationships.

Carl Linnaeus developed binomial nomenclature: each species has a two-part Latin name — genus (capitalised) and species (lower case), e.g. Homo sapiens, Felis catus. Italicised when typed, underlined when handwritten.

The traditional hierarchy (largest to smallest): kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species. Organisms in the same species can breed to produce fertile offspring (biological species concept at GCSE).

A dichotomous key asks paired questions with two choices, leading step by step to the identity of an organism. Each branch uses observable features (number of legs, leaf shape, etc.).

Early classification used mainly observable features (appearance, anatomy). Modern classification also uses biochemical and genetic evidence because convergent evolution can make unrelated species look alike.

The three-domain system (Woese): Archaea, Bacteria, Eukaryota. Archaea and Bacteria are prokaryotes; Eukaryota includes plants, animals, fungi and protists. RNA analysis showed archaea are as different from bacteria as from eukaryotes.

Within eukaryotes, the five-kingdom model (plants, animals, fungi, protists, prokaryotes) is still taught at GCSE level, but prokaryotes are now split into two domains.

Classification reflects evolution: species in the same genus share a more recent common ancestor than species in different genera. Fossils and DNA sequences support the tree of life.

How to read and write a binomial name
Homo sapiens: Homo = genus (shared with extinct relatives if same genus), sapiens = species epithet. Never translate as “wise man” in the exam unless asked — write the Latin. Felis catus domestic cat; Canis lupus wolf. Same genus means closer relationship than same family only. If given a table of names, group by genus first. Handwritten: underline both words separately. Typed: italicise. Common names (dog, rose) are ambiguous; binomial is universal.

Using a dichotomous key without getting lost
Start at couplet 1: two mutually exclusive features. Pick one path, go to the next number indicated. Do not skip. Example: 1a wings present → go to 2; 1b wings absent → go to 5. At the end you reach a species name. In practicals, use a clear feature (flowers white vs yellow), not “pretty vs ugly”. Keys fail if features overlap or if the organism is a juvenile that lacks adult traits. Examiners may give a key and an unknown — follow the path and show each choice.

Why three domains changed the old two-kingdom prokaryote lump
Once, bacteria and “ancient bacteria” were one group. RNA gene sequencing showed archaea (extremophiles, methanogens) are distinct from true bacteria. Both lack nuclei, but biochemistry differs (membrane lipids, RNA polymerase). Eukaryota have nuclei, mitochondria, etc. GCSE may ask why classification changed: new evidence, better microscopes, molecular clocks. Convergent evolution: sharks (fish) and dolphins (mammals) look similar but classification by skeleton and lactation separates them. DNA trumps shape for deep relationships.
