Variation and mutation
Separate genetic and environmental variation for GCSE Biology: meiosis, fertilisation, mutation as a DNA change, and why most mutations do nothing while a few change a protein and a phenotype.
Variation is differences within a species. Genetic: alleles, meiosis, fertilisation, mutation. Environmental: diet, sun, training. Most characteristics are both. Mutation is a random DNA change, not a wish.

Variation is differences between individuals of the same species. It can be genetic, environmental, or both (height: genes plus diet).

Genetic variation comes from meiosis (shuffling alleles), random fertilisation, and mutation. Sexual reproduction therefore produces more variation than asexual mitosis clones.

A mutation is a change in DNA (a base sequence). It can happen when DNA is copied. Most mutations have no effect on phenotype; some change a protein and therefore a characteristic; a few are harmful; rarely one is beneficial.

Mutations increase the number of alleles in a population. Without mutation, natural selection would have no new variants to act on.

Then say most have no effect, some change a protein. “Mutation means cancer” is too narrow.
“Sexual reproduction produces variation; asexual reproduction produces clones.”
Meiosis and fertilisation versus mitosis. Mutation can still add variation to a clone line, slowly.

Useful against scare language. The ones that matter change amino acids and protein shape.

How do I classify a feature as genetic, environmental, or both?
Blood group: genetic only (alleles of a gene), environment does not turn A into B. Scars: environmental. Height: both — alleles set a range, diet and disease move you within it. Identical twins with different masses: environment. A plant grown in shade versus light: more environment, though genotype still matters. In the exam, if they give a graph of human height, call it continuous variation and mention genes plus environment. If they give blood groups as bars, discontinuous. Do not force every trait into “50/50”. Use the evidence in the question. “Variation is good” is not a mark; name the source.

When does a mutation change the phenotype?
If the base change still codes for the same amino acid, the protein is unchanged (you may not need the word silent). If the amino acid changes in an enzyme’s active site, the substrate may no longer fit — phenotype could be “cannot digest X” or a disease. If a cell-cycle gene changes, mitosis may run uncontrolled (cancer), but that is in somatic cells and is not passed to children unless the mutation is in a gamete. Only mutations in gametes (or in the early embryo) are inherited. That distinction matters: smoking can mutate lung-cell DNA without changing the genome of sperm in the same simple story, though mutagens can affect gonads too. For GCSE, “mutation in DNA may change a protein; if it is in a gamete it can be inherited”.

Why does asexual reproduction look variation-free until you look closer?
Strawberry runners and bacterial binary fission copy the genome by mitosis-like processes, so offspring match the parent. A mutation in one bacterium still creates a new allele, which is how antibiotic resistance can appear even without sex. Plants can also mix sexual flowers with asexual runners, so a field of strawberries is not all clones if seeds are involved. When a six-mark compares sexual and asexual, give variation versus identical, energy/time versus speed, and a named example each. Mutation sits under both as a rare extra. Do not credit asexual reproduction with Punnett-square variation; that requires meiosis and fertilisation.

Two siblings differ in height. They inherited different allele combinations from meiosis and fertilisation (genetic variation). They also ate different diets (environmental). A third sibling has a new allele neither parent showed: a mutation in a gamete changed DNA, which may have changed a protein. Most such mutations would have done nothing. None of the children “tried to mutate to become taller”. A clone of a plant cutting would match the parent genetically unless a mutation occurred.
