90-word writing
Three compulsory bullets, about 90 words, clear communication, and three time frames for the top language marks.
Every bullet. Three time frames. One porque per idea. Stop near 90 words and check the verbs.
The important bits
What you need to know
- 1
On current papers the 90-word task has three compulsory bullets. Cover all three or the content band drops.
- 2
Write about 90 words. Examiners mark all of it, but a 200-word ramble usually adds errors without adding marks.
- 3
Content marks reward clear communication and developed ideas. Language marks reward variety, complexity and time frames.
- 4
Top language band needs successful reference to past, present and future. Two time frames sit in the band below.
- 5
A time frame is meaning, not a tense label. Voy a mañana is future. Hace tres años que vivo aquí can cover a past stretch.
- 6
Give each bullet a mini paragraph: time phrase, verb, opinion, porque, one extra detail.
- 7
Check: verb endings, gustar agreement, ser/estar, accents on hablé, habló, hablaré, and noun-adjective agreement.
- 8
Choose the question you can say more about. A thinner topic with accurate verbs beats a flashy topic you cannot conjugate.
Quotations worth analysing
Short evidence. Real method.
“Ahora voy al instituto todos los días. El año pasado visité Madrid. El año que viene estudiaré más español porque es útil.”
Present habit, preterite trip, future plus porque. Slot this skeleton under any three bullets and then add detail.

How is the 90-word question marked?
Two lots of marks sit on the same piece. Communication asks whether you covered the bullets and whether a reader can follow you. Quality of language asks for variety, some complexity, and time frames. To reach the top language mark you need all three time frames, mainly successful. Two time frames live in the middle. Missing a bullet caps the content mark even if your Spanish is elegant. There is no need for equal coverage, but each bullet needs a real idea, not a three-word nod. Plan before you write: bullet, tense, opinion. Then write. Then spend three minutes on verbs and agreements, which is where otherwise good answers leak marks.

How do I plan three bullets in 90 words?
Thirty words a bullet is a useful ceiling. Bullet 1 present: Normalmente juego al fútbol los sábados porque me encanta y mis amigos son simpáticos. Bullet 2 past: El año pasado jugué un partido importante y ganamos. Fue emocionante. Bullet 3 future: El año que viene probaré el rugby y voy a entrenar más. That is already a complete frame. Add one adjective, one connective and one extra verb to the thinnest bullet. Do not open a fourth topic. Sequence with primero, luego and por fin only if the bullets are a story. If they are separate themes, separate paragraphs keep the examiner’s tick list clean.

What language actually lifts the mark?
A justified opinion, a connective that is not y, a comparative, and one subordinate clause: cuando, porque, que. Me gusta el cine que está en el centro porque es más barato que el otro. That sentence does more work than three choppy ones. Use a boot verb and an irregular you know: puedo, quiero, tengo, fui, hice. Complexity you cannot control becomes a major error. A major error is one that blocks the message: wrong person, wrong tense, or a sentence that cannot be understood. Minor slips on accents still let the message through. Aim for clear and varied, not for a subjunctive display.
See the idea in action
Bullet set: school / last weekend / next year. Mi instituto es grande y estudio español, que me gusta porque es útil. El sábado pasado fui al cine con mis amigos y comimos palomitas. Fue divertido. El año que viene iré a España y voy a practicar más el idioma, ya que quiero ser profesor. All three bullets, three time frames, opinions and reasons, about 70 words with room to add one extra detail.
Exam technique
Turn knowledge into marks
After writing, underline every verb. You should see at least one present, one past and one future. If a colour is missing, add one short sentence rather than rewriting the whole piece.
Common mistakes
Do not give these marks away
- 01
Skipping a bullet because you liked the other two. That caps the content mark.
- 02
Writing only in the present. Without a second and third time frame, language marks stall.
- 03
Translating English word for word: I am 15 years becomes soy quince años instead of tengo quince años.
What do you need for the top quality-of-language band on the 90-word task?
AAll three time frames, mainly successful
BExactly 90 words and no adjectives
COne long present-tense paragraph
Show the answer
All three time frames, mainly successful. Past, present and future must be mainly successful. Word count is approximate. A single tense cannot reach the top language band.
Quick questions
If this is the bit you searched
What if I write 120 words?
It is all marked. Extra words only help if they stay accurate and still cover the bullets. Most students pick up more marks by checking verbs than by adding a fourth paragraph.
Do I have to use the subjunctive?
No. Clear tenses, opinions and porque will score. A broken subjunctive is a major error. Use it only if it is automatic.
