Death tolls are lower than in LIC tropical-storm disasters, but exams want cause, effect, response and management. Physical: prolonged Atlantic rain, steep catchments (Boscastle-style flash floods), urbanisation increasing runoff. Human: floodplain building, drained peat, clogged drains. Effects: property damage, insurance claims, mental health, farm losses, infrastructure. Response: EA warnings, military aid, community sandbags. Evaluation: hard defences protect one town and may speed flow downstream; soft engineering and upstream storage (woodland, leaky dams) treat the whole catchment. Somerset is the textbook row: farmers wanted dredging; environmentalists wanted holistic catchment management.

Wind and water get headlines; heat kills more people in quiet years. 2003 western Europe and 2022 UK peaks show excess mortality among elderly and those with respiratory conditions. Urban heat island: concrete stores heat, nights stay warm, air conditioning is rare in UK homes. Management: heat-health plans, checking on neighbours, green roofs, shade. Climate change loads the dice toward hotter summers. Contrast with cold events like Beast from the East: both need vulnerable-group geography, not only cancelled trains.
