The Thar (Great Indian Desert) lies in north-west India (especially Rajasthan) and south-east Pakistan. It sits in the rain shadow of the Aravalli Hills and on the dry side of the monsoon; rainfall is often under 250 mm, highly unreliable, with a huge diurnal temperature range.

Plant adaptations: long tap roots (khejri), small or thorny leaves to cut transpiration, waxy cuticles, water storage in stems, and widely spaced individuals that reduce competition for soil moisture. Name the plant and the water problem it solves.

Development schemes create winners on the canal and losers with waterlogging. Evaluation is the point of the case study.

Always attach the adaptation to transpiration, heat or moisture competition. “They survive the heat” is incomplete.

Location is a climate machine
Do not start a Thar answer with camels. Start with latitude, the Aravalli rain shadow, and a monsoon that often rains out before it reaches western Rajasthan. High pressure and clear skies drive intense daytime heating and rapid night radiation — the diurnal range that kills unprotected seedlings and shapes housing. Wind sorts sand into dunes where vegetation is sparse. Once you have that physical frame, adaptations make sense: khejri trees tap deep moisture; thorns cut browsing and transpiration; people build thick walls and move at dusk. A location paragraph that only says “in India” wastes the first marks. Map it: India–Pakistan border, Rajasthan, rain shadow. Then the opportunities sit on a real desert, not a Hollywood dune.

Opportunities that drink
Minerals, solar and tourism all need water and access, which the Thar does not give freely. Bhadla-scale solar wants land and sun — abundant — plus transmission lines, maintenance crews and cooling or cleaning water. Jaisalmer tourism wants hotels, flush toilets and winter visitors; it slumps in peak heat and can sideline herders if dunes become exclusive camps. Quarries want haul roads and labour, then leave pits. The Indira Gandhi Canal is the biggest “opportunity engine”: commercial crops, drinking water, some tree belts against sand. It also drives salinisation where irrigation is heavy and drainage poor. In 9-mark answers, pick two opportunities, attach a named place to each, and show the water or inequality cost. That is development geography in a desert, not a list of nice ideas.

Bishnoi communities in Rajasthan are the named cultural ecology many teachers use: religious protection of khejri trees and blackbuck, still inside a commercial desert. Pastoralists move animals to follow browse. Canal colonists farm in a different rhythm. Squashing them into “desert tribes” loses marks. Show how livelihoods map onto water points, then how state schemes (canal, solar park, wildlife tourism) rearrange that map. Challenges include heatstroke risk, isolation from hospitals, and sand burying fields after drought. Management is intermediate: tanks, drip irrigation, shade-net horticulture, regulated grazing — not a Thames Barrier. The specification wants you to see a hot desert as a lived landscape with a development dilemma, not as a biome poster with a camel sticker.
