Meanders and oxbow lakes
GCSE Geography oxbow lakes: meander mechanics with the thalweg on the outer bend, river cliffs and slip-off slopes, neck cut-off in flood, and the sealed crescent on the floodplain.
Fast outside, cliff. Slow inside, slip-off. Neck thins, flood snips, deposition zips the ends. The river goes straight; the lake keeps the curve.

Meanders form where the channel has enough energy to erode laterally, typically middle and lower course on a floodplain. The river is not “lost”; it is swinging.

The thalweg (line of fastest flow) is flung to the outer bend. Hydraulic action and abrasion cut a river cliff (cut bank). Deep water, high velocity, erosion.

On the inner bend, velocity falls, energy drops, and the river deposits a point bar / slip-off slope of sand and gravel. Shallow water, low velocity, deposition. One bend, two processes — that pairing is the 4-mark core.

Helicoidal flow (a corkscrew secondary circulation) helps move sediment from the outer pool towards the inner bar. You can mention it on higher-demand answers; do not let it replace cliff and slip-off.

Continued lateral erosion narrows the meander neck. During high discharge the river cuts through the neck, taking the steeper, shorter path. That is the cut-off.

Deposition at the new entrance and exit seals the abandoned loop. An oxbow lake (cut-off lake) sits as a crescent on the floodplain. It may dry into a meander scar.

Locate if you can: meander belts on the Tees, the Mississippi, or any named floodplain your class used. An oxbow with no river name is weaker than High Force with no sill, but a place still helps.

Exam discipline: do not build oxbows with waterfalls, and do not put the fastest flow on the inside bend. Those two swaps are the commonest river fails.

One bend, two banks, two processes
Draw a plan-view banana. Label outer cliff, inner slip-off, thalweg hugging the outside, and a cross-section that is asymmetric: deep and steep out, shallow and gentle in. That diagram is worth more than a paragraph of “the river wiggles”. Velocity differences exist because of centrifugal tendency in the curve and because friction is less in deeper water. Erosion widens the loop; deposition builds the bar; the neck becomes a thin strip of floodplain. Students who say both banks erode equally cannot explain an oxbow. In the exam, spend thirty seconds on the sketch even if the question does not demand it — it stops you reversing inside and outside under pressure. Then write the words hydraulic action and deposition so the sketch is not mute.

The flood that finishes the job
A meander is not an oxbow yet. You need a high-flow event that cheats the long way round. Water takes the steepest, shortest gradient through the neck; that new channel captures the discharge; velocity in the old loop crashes; load is dumped at both ends; the crescent is sealed. Later the oxbow becomes a still lake, then a marsh, then a scar. That ageing is useful if the question asks for floodplain features together (oxbow, levee, floodplain, meander scar). Stay chronological: meander → neck → cut-off → deposition seal → lake. If you start with the lake, you have described a landform without a mechanism. Name a floodplain river if you have one; the Tees lower course is a tidy link to High Force in the same drainage basin, different landform, different energy.

Thalweg is a word worth learning
Thalweg simply means the line of maximum velocity, usually the deepest thread. In a straight channel it sits mid-stream; in a meander it slams the outer bank. Using the word shows you know why the cliff is where it is. You do not need a page of fluid dynamics. You do need to reject the myth that rivers are fastest at the source in every sense — a rocky, shallow upland channel can be slower than a efficient lower-course meander at bankfull. Oxbow questions are middle/lower course. Keep High Force in the upper course and oxbows on the floodplain so the long-profile story stays consistent. That course-by-course map is how teachers stop landforms floating in space.

Outside = fast = cliff. Inside = slow = slip-off. Neck, flood, seal. If those five are in order, the oxbow is formed. Reverse inside/outside and you score almost nothing.
