GCSE Geography coastal management: hard and soft engineering versus managed retreat, Shoreline Management Plans, Medmerry realignment, and why every scheme creates winners and losers.
Hold the line with rock, work with the beach, or let the sea in on purpose. SMPs choose who keeps a house and who gains a marsh — never nobody.

Hard engineering: sea walls, groynes, rock armour (rip-rap), gabions, revetments. Obvious, expensive, locally effective, and good at shifting erosion along the sediment cell (Mappleton). Concrete looks like action; it is not automatically sustainable.

Soft engineering: beach nourishment, dune regeneration, marsh creation, beach recycling. Works with processes, needs repeating, looks “natural”, still costs money and lorries. A nourished beach is a sacrificial battery of sand.

Managed retreat / managed realignment: breach a low-value defence, flood farmland, create intertidal habitat that absorbs wave energy. Medmerry, West Sussex (opened 2013), is the named UK open-coast example: a new wetland in front of a realigned bank protecting Selsey-side communities.

Shoreline Management Plans (SMPs) set policy per stretch: hold the line, advance the line, managed realignment, or no active intervention. They work in sediment cells, not parish guilt. “Do nothing” is a decision with losers.

Cost–benefit: it can be cheaper to abandon a field than to armour a till cliff forever. Fairness: a second-home sea wall versus a tenant farmer is politics. Geography 9-markers want that tension, not a catalogue of wall types.

Winners and losers: groynes win the cafe and lose the down-drift farm; sea walls win the promenade and can lose the beach (scour); retreat wins habitat and inland flood storage and loses the field that becomes mudflat.

Holderness, Medmerry and a named sea wall (for example Scarborough or a local promenade) give you hard, unfair, and retreat examples. Learn one of each rather than nine unnamed structures.

Exam judgement: sustainable coastal management matches the value of what is defended to the cost and to the cell. “Build a wall everywhere” fails SMP logic and fails the paper.

Hard, soft, retreat — pick with a reason
Hard buys time for a town and a road (Mappleton, a sea-walled promenade). Soft buys a buffer that must be topped up (Bournemouth-style nourishment if you have been taught it). Retreat buys space for the sea where land is cheaper than concrete (Medmerry). The exam is not asking which word is “greenest”; it is asking which fits value, sediment and risk. A nuclear site or a dense town still gets hold-the-line. A sinking field in front of a new bank can be realigned. Write the scheme, the place, one advantage, one disadvantage, and who pays. That five-part sentence is an evaluated paragraph. A list of definitions of gabions without a winner or loser is a glossary, and glossaries cap at Level 2.

Medmerry: letting the sea in on purpose
On the Selsey peninsula the old shingle bank was overtopping and expensive to hold. The Environment Agency breached the defences in 2013, flooded farmland, and built a new inland defence. The new intertidal area takes storm energy, stores water, and became a habitat and visitor site. Some farmers lost productive land; downstream and inland assets were meant to be safer. That is managed realignment, not a tsunami of incompetence. Use Medmerry when the question says sustainable or “do you agree that hard engineering is best”. The answer is: not here, because the benefit–cost ratio favoured space over a forever wall on a low coast. Pair it with Holderness, where people still argue for rock because houses and a road sit on till.

SMPs are moral maps
A Shoreline Management Plan looks decades ahead in a sediment cell. Hold the line: keep defences (expensive, protects property). Advance the line: build seaward (rare, greedy of sediment). Managed realignment: new line inland. No active intervention: let erosion happen. Each choice creates a class of loser — the taxpayer, the down-drift parish, the farmer, or the house that will fall. Climate sea-level rise makes hold-the-line dearer every decade, which is why retreat is no longer a fringe idea. In 9-mark “discuss”, pick two SMP options, attach Holderness and Medmerry, and decide that fairness depends on whose assets count. That is human geography wearing a coat of armour stone.
