What you need to know

    A climate graph plots monthly mean temperature (°C, usually a line) and precipitation (mm, usually bars) for a location. It shows long-term average climate, not one week’s weather.

    Read the axes: temperature scale, precipitation scale, months labelled. Compare wettest and driest months, warmest and coldest, and the annual range.

  3. 3

    Equatorial (e.g. Amazonia): high temperature all year (26–28°C), heavy rainfall every month, small seasonal temperature range. Supports tropical rainforest.

  4. 4

    Hot desert (e.g. Sahara, Atacama): high temperatures, very low rainfall, often a slight winter rain peak or almost none. Supports desert biome.

  5. 5

    Mediterranean: hot dry summers, mild wet winters — precipitation bars low in summer, temperature peak in July/August. Supports maquis/chaparral.

  6. 6

    Temperate maritime (UK): mild winters, cool summers, precipitation throughout the year with a slight winter maximum — no extreme dry season.

    Monsoon: very wet summer season, drier winter — huge precipitation range between months (e.g. Mumbai).

    Link graph to biome and human activity: farming calendars, tourism seasons, water stress. “Describe the climate” means pattern + data reference + consequence.

How to describe a graph in four sentences

Sentence 1: overall temperature — hot all year, or seasonal swing. Sentence 2: precipitation pattern — constant, summer dry, winter wet, monsoon peak. Sentence 3: quote two months with figures if the axis allows. Sentence 4: biome or human link — rainforest, desert agriculture, UK farming year-round rain. Examiners punish “it rains a lot” without months or amounts.

Common graph traps

Mixing up scales: 100 mm rain is not the same visual as 30°C. Calling UK climate “dry in summer” when bars are still present — Mediterranean is the dry-summer type, not Britain. Forgetting southern-hemisphere seasons if a graph shows July cold. Always check hemisphere if latitude is given.
