GCSE Geography climate change mitigation: cutting greenhouse gases through renewables, efficiency, afforestation and international agreements, with UK and global examples you can name in 6-mark questions.
Mitigation treats the cause. Adaptation lives with the effects. Paris sets targets; wind farms and insulation are what countries actually do.

Mitigation reduces greenhouse-gas emissions or increases carbon sinks so the enhanced greenhouse effect slows. Adaptation manages impacts already locked in — sea walls, drought crops, managed retreat. GCSE answers need both words used correctly.

Burning fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas) is the main anthropogenic source of CO₂. Transport, industry, electricity generation and home heating are the UK sectors examiners expect you to slice.

Renewable energy cuts emissions at source: wind (onshore and offshore — Dogger Bank, Hornsea), solar, hydro, tidal. Nuclear is low-carbon electricity but not renewable; know your teacher’s line on whether it counts as mitigation.

Short evidence. Real method.
“Mitigation cuts the cause; adaptation lives with the symptoms.”
If a question asks for mitigation examples, do not write sea walls. If it asks for adaptation, do not write wind farms unless you explain flood risk from sea-level rise they cannot stop alone.
“The Paris Agreement 2015 committed countries to nationally determined contributions.”
Name the year and the flexible pledge model. It is political architecture, not a physical switch. Implementation gaps are fair evaluation.
“UK offshore wind in the North Sea is a named mitigation strategy on many mark schemes.”
Pair a technology with a place: Hornsea, Dogger Bank, or “North Sea wind farms”. Vague “use renewables” scores less than a located example.

Mitigation is not adaptation with a longer word
Students mix these up constantly. Mitigation: reduce emissions or enhance sinks — wind farms, nuclear, insulating homes, restoring peat, carbon pricing, the Paris pledge to keep warming well below 2°C. Adaptation: Thames Barrier, raising houses in Bangladesh, switching crops, early-warning systems, moving a capital. A coastal LIC may adapt because it cannot wait for global mitigation; an HIC can afford both. Exam questions often ask which is more sustainable. Mitigation treats the disease; adaptation treats the symptoms. Geography’s honest answer is that both are required, and that adaptation without mitigation becomes an endless, unequal arms race against the sea.

Why renewables need a sentence on reliability
Wind and solar are intermittent: the grid needs storage, interconnectors to Norway’s hydro, or gas backup while transitioning. A 6-mark mitigation answer that only says “build more turbines” without mentioning grid or storage looks naive. Stronger answers: offshore wind at scale (UK North Sea), solar on south-facing roofs, and reducing demand through insulation so peaks shrink. Nuclear appears on some specs as low-carbon baseload. The evaluation line examiners like: mitigation works fastest where energy demand is falling and clean supply is rising together — Germany’s Energiewende is a case study of ambition and political cost, not a fairy tale.

Afforestation is not a free offset
Trees absorb CO₂ while growing, but planting the wrong species in the wrong place can dry soils, displace biodiversity or burn in wildfires, releasing carbon back. UK peat restoration often scores higher than quick conifer plantations on deep peat. In the Amazon, avoided deforestation is mitigation; cattle ranching and soya expansion are the counter-example. Name a mechanism: photosynthesis locks carbon in biomass; decay and fire release it. A 4-mark answer needs one benefit (sink, habitat if native woodland) and one limitation (time lag, permanence, land competition with food).

Turn knowledge into marks
Open mitigation answers with “reduce emissions or increase sinks”, then name two different mechanisms — energy supply and energy demand, or forests and fuel switching. Never list sea walls under mitigation.
