A funnel, not a floodplain saucer

Somerset 2014 was a dish that filled for weeks. Boscastle was a funnel that fired in an afternoon. The Valency drops quickly from moor to harbour; rain had nowhere slow to sit; the hydrograph peaked before people had finished saying “is that thunder?”. Granite and saturated ground meant rapid runoff. The village occupies the only flat bit — the worst place in a flash flood. That site-and-situation sentence is geography: physical funnel, human bottleneck. When you explain causes, stack rainfall intensity, steep slopes, confluence, and bridges as debris dams. When you explain effects, stack property, cars, tourism and the helicopter rescue, and be honest that this HIC event was terrifying and expensive without being a mass-fatality LIC storm surge. Debris is part of the river

A clean trapezoidal channel on a textbook page is not Boscastle at 17:00. Trees from the valley sides and cars from the car park became mobile load, then jams at bridges. Water that cannot go through goes over and around — into shops. So management that only “dredges silt” would miss the point; the 2005–08 scheme built debris screens to stop the next woodland from becoming a dam, widened the bed, and gave bridges a bigger eye. That is protection and planning after monitoring a specific failure. Evaluate it: locally effective, expensive, does not stop another 200 mm cloudburst, and climate may load the dice for intense downpours. Still, it is a more precise response than a generic sea wall. Named engineering beats “better defences”.

Use Boscastle to show that the UK has violent weather hazards, then immediately limit the comparison with Haiyan: different process, different death toll, different recovery. Helicopters arrived the same afternoon; Tacloban’s airport died. Insurance, media, and the Environment Agency’s later works are capacity. None of that makes 2004 “not serious” for the families who lost shops. The mature line is: HIC capacity converted a potential mass-casualty flood into a famous near miss and a rebuild. If a question is only UK flooding, you can pair Boscastle (flash, steep, debris) with Somerset (prolonged, flat, dredging politics) and look like you know two hydrographs, not one panic. That pairing is teacher catnip because it proves you did not memorise a single undifferentiated “UK flood”.
